First of all, let me introduce myself. I am Penny Williams and since November 2010 I have been the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) Regional Representative for Surrey.

I do have one other role in the County: I am the membership secretary of Surrey Bird Club. If you are interested in joining the Surrey Bird Club or, you would like to know more about the club, here is a link to their website.  The club has regular field trips which are designed to help develop people’s birding skills, and I can thoroughly recommend these field trips.

Penny Williams

I am involved in the following current BTO surveys: WeBS, BBS, WBBS, Garden Bird Watch, Garden Nesting Survey, Nest Box Challenge.  I also send my records into BirdTrack.  An explanation of what each survey involves is on other pages of this website.

In the past I have been involved in the BTO Nightjar, Woodcock, House Sparrow, Swallow, Dartford Warbler and Ringed Plover surveys and have carried out Atlas surveys both local to my home in north-west Surrey as well as in the southern part of Surrey near Haslemere, Chiddingfold and Holmbury St Mary and so feel I have some of the qualifications to be the BTO Regional Rep for Surrey.   In fact, listing all of this I think I am a surveyholic (although I am sure there is no such word). I must be if you take into account the fact I also carry out a reptile survey for Surrey Wildlife Trust on Brentmoor Heath, the Thames Basin Heath Nightjar survey and carry out the Butterfly Conservation survey on my BBS site as well!

The purpose of this website is to:

  • explain more about the BTO surveys
  • provide information about the sites where I still need surveyors in the hope that you will feel you are able to take on one of the sites
  • provide links to other websites including some that will help you with bird identification
  • let you know how you can contact me or meet me
